From Your Andrewartha ( Pilkington Friends). Until Stu and Sandy moved to Spain for their retirement Jim Balsdon Frank Morrell and myself together with our wives spent several enjoyable nights out to dinner with our friends Stu and Sandy. We also had a wonderful day at their wedding . A Match made in Heaven! Sadly Betty passed away in 2009 but I am sure like the rest of us she would be very saddened by the sudden and premature departure of our friend and former workmate Stu. Stu joined us at the Glassworks sometime in the 1980's. We have talked about this but cannot remember the exact year. We had advertised for men to get our Emergency Glazing Service up and running and Stu had responded with his pal Chris Stilwell. They joined us and worked on this out of hours service responding to Emergencies boarding up broken shop windows and doors mainly, usually in the middle of the night. Stu was always willing anytime and later came to work with us as our full time main delivery driver. He was always popular with the customers. A couple of stories that Jim recalls working with Stu. During the storms of 1990 Stu and Jim went in response on an emergency to a house in Rockend ( the posh area of Torquay ) to the aid of a chap whose windows were being broken by tiles flying from a house across the road.He was trying to protect his piano in one of the rooms, but as fast as they boarded up one window a flying tile broke another one. Whilst they were there they watched the chaps recently erected Conservatory collapse " like a pack of cards". On another occasion Jim and Stu went on another Emergency to board up a broken shopfront in Salcombe.Right next to the shop they were working on,filming was taking place on a Hercules Poirot story. The film makers had to keep asking our Emergency boys to move out of the way.Stu was fascinated with this filming Jim says and on their journey back they were talking about it and Stu had decided he wanted to be an actor. However it was felt that Suart Allison might not be a suitable name and after some deliberation Stu decided that he thought Julian would be brilliant!!.This was Stu always cheerful, always good for a laugh. During all my many years at the Glassworks, and Jim and Frank agree with me, we have never worked with a nicer man. Rest in Peace Stu. All our love Roger Hele,Jim,Frank,Barbara,Angie and Betty(deceased).
